Description:
Hasegawa Tōhaku’s ink on paper screen painting depicts two groups of pine trees in the mountains. The curve of the trees to the right suggest an incline- supporting the idea of the snowy mountains at the extreme right. The idea of perspective is being played with here, as the more emboldened and textured pine trees seem to be at the front of the piece. The shadowy figures behind them are pushed back, while also hinting at the presence of a dense mist filling the mountain. The image itself is simplistic and mostly made up of soft strokes, ultimately creating an elegant and calm mood.
