Nijo Castle

Nijo Castle
Kyoto, Japan
1625

Nijo Castle was designed and built as the Kyoto residence of the Tokugawa shōguns. The structure is grand and incorporates many gold accents. The castle was designed within two artificially designed motes. The outer and inner motes create a sense of privacy within the castle. Within the site plan there are many gardens and structures that make up the castle. A series of pathways and bridges can be used to explore the gardens and structures. Gates are used to protect the different pathways and bridges to the structures. Highly decorated screens and ceilings fill the interior of the space. The attention to detail highlights the power and wealth of the shōguns. Due to the many chambers and gates visitors were only able to view curtain parts of the castle. This structure is a great example of how power and control are reflected through the architecture.
