The image was taken from outside the castle. The fence wall enclosed the castle which protects the shogun and his family. The wall was made of stone-like material on a slanted slope, this could help protect the castle and keep intruders out. The wall might be sloped making it harder for invaders to get into the castle, making them slip easily. The center of the image is a white house, which might act as a gatehouse. The house consists of three floors, with a traditional Japanese roof, the style of is irimoya (hip-and-gable roof). There is a canal separating the castle from the outside, which might be used as a defense mechanism for the shogun making it harder for invaders to get in, buying the shogun more time to hide in the castle if there was an invasion. Protection was important for the residents that lived there so therefore
