Coomaraswamy is a paper that outlines and details the indian origins of the buddha image as well as the iconography. Coomaraswamy talks about how there isn’t any eastern cultures that are traceable in the indian origins of the buddha image and art of that time pertaining to the buddha. The author contrast this statement to the fact that eastern cultures have always influenced the arts in other cultures. The paper also discusses the physical aspects of the statues and image, providing images within the text and allowing the reader to follow along visually with what is being discussed. The discussion talks about clothing and atire, from headdresses to sitting/standing positions and the meanings behind these various artistic elements. The closing pages of the paper discuss the necessity of the buddha image in eastern asian culture as well as the traceable impact it has had on other aspects of eastern asian lifestyles.

Sources: The Art Bulletin

https://www.jstor.org/stable/3046550

Joey Pimlott AHI/EAS 104

Coomaraswamy, Ananda K. “The Origin of the Buddha Image.” The Art Bulletin 9, no. 4 (1927): 287-329.
