Godzilla, a world famous pop culture icon and notorious monster, can be interpreted as a modern culmination of Japanese history and folklore. Created in 1954, just shy of ten years after the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Godzilla is often thought of as a personification of nuclear weapons or even the United States itself. The poster above was for the original Japanese Godzilla film, in which Godzilla emerges from the depths of the sea and wreaks havoc on the people of Japan. He can be seen in the poster destroying Japanese fighter jets, and breathing radioactive fire on the city, in what is perhaps a metaphor for atomic weapons.
