This image depicts an interior view of the Katsura Imperial Villa in Kyoto. The villa was built from 1620-30 for a prince of the emperor’s court, and the building’s architecture reflects the beauty and luxury of the patron’s position. As shown in the image, the Katsura Villa is a building with lots of open space created by the large doors and windows. These open features invite the beauty of the surrounding gardens into the interior of the building, emphasizing the imperial connections to nature. The connection is further emphasized through the natural materials used in the structure. This can be seen by the exposed wooden beams on the ceiling and the small boulder that acts as a step into the doorway. The Katsura Villa reflects the Japanese principle of wabi-sabi, which suggests that beauty is found in the simplicity and imperfections of nature. While the building has a simple and streamlined look, its open concept uses nature as a way to decorate its interior.
