Nijo Castle

Title: Nijo Castle 01
Date of creation: 6 April 2009

This image depicts the Tōnan-sumiyagura (South-east corner turret) of Nijo Castle, across a prominent moat. Discoloring to the stone can be seen, but it seems to be in relatively good condition, but whether that is due to restoration or due to the quality of the stonework is not completely evident. The stone bricks fit in with each other almost perfectly, and are cut to create a smooth, angled surface that looks difficult to scale with the addition of the water in the moat itself. The purpose of the wall for defenses and war is apparent, but the quality and simplicity of the stonework helps it keep in line with the general beauty of the castle and its architecture.
