Evening at Edge of Shinobazu Pond

Title: Evening at Edge of Shinobazu Pond (at Veno Park, Tokyo)

Creator: Shiro Kasamatsu

Date: 1932

Culture: Japanese

Medium: Color Woodcut

Dimensions: 36×24 cm

Location: Wetmore Print Collection, Art History Dept, Cummings Arts Center, Connecticut College, New London

Distinctive Visual Characteristics: This Japanese print shows a beautiful park lit by lanterns during the end of a sunset. This piece is simple at first glance but there is actually a great amount of detail in it, the water ripples, lines on the light posts, the leaves, so much detail while still looking somewhat blurry. This print is important because it shows the beauty of the Japanese landscape blended with society’s sidewalks, lights and arches.
