The Pine Trees screen is a single part of a six part panel of folding screens created by Hasegawa Tohaku, a very profound Japanese artist. This painting, Pine Trees, has been so revered by Japanese culture and society that it is considered a national treasure. Upon research the scene is highly influenced by the “splashed ink” technique developed by Sesshu Toyo. This is one of the first pieces that featured trees as the main subject. It depicts a scene of pine trees shrouded by a mist. There is also a partial formation of a mountain in the distance.
